Victor Vasnetsov, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, 1887

The Book of Revelation tells of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The ancient text states that God holds scriptures with seven seals in his hand. The Lamb of God (symbolizing Jesus, seen at top center) opens the first four seals, releasing the four horsemen. The first, Conquest, rides a white horse and carries a bow. The second is War, swinging a sword. The third is Famine, riding a deathly black horse and carrying the scales used to measure the worth of an individual’s life. Bringing up the rear is Death.

Happy Halloween!
