Sandro Botticelli, The Annunciation, 1489

The Annunciation is a commonly depicted scene from the Bible where the archangel Gabriel comes down from heaven to announce to the Virgin Mary that she has been selected by god to bear his child, Jesus Christ the Savior. Here Gabriel carries a white lily, the flower typically associated with the purity of the Virgin. Gabriel asks Mary if she will accept the job, upon which she replies “Let it be done to me.”
