Pander is an artist here in Portland, OR that we look to for inspiration. This Neo-Expressionist painter is originally from Holland, and lived through the Nazi occupation there as a small child. In the 90’s he started a powerful series about his childhood. About this painting in particular, Pander says “On our street another large family was involved in the resistance. There were routine house searches. People hid between the joists under the floors. The wife pretended to be ill. I tried to make these works from a child’s point of view.”
