Vincent Desiderio, Men in Snow, 2017

The painting is intriguing; faceless figures cannibalize their dead comrades. Desiderio says that “It began with my desire to paint a clotted picture inundated with white. The image emerged as I worked the canvas – the technical narrative preceding the dramatic narrative.” By ‘technical narrative’ he means the journey an artist goes through when making a painting, all the little decisions made along the way, and how the layers of meaning create their own story in paint.

As for the ‘dramatic narrative,’ that would be the subject matter, or the scene we are seeing here. Desiderio says “I’ll just say that the reference is to art in our times.”
