Per Elof Nilsson Ricklund, Weardians, 2018⠀

The artist writes that “This painting is about the indissoluble connection between environment and Samì culture [from northern Scandinavia]. Stories and myth are pillars of light in the dark northern winter. [The Samì] are of their land and they cannot move, forced or purposefully, without making cultural sacrifices. Their culture comes from living with nature, herding reindeer, hunting and fishing. In between them they are holding the shamanic drum used to foresee the future. It’s a symbol for navigation of life. A connection to nature now turned with its back to us. Drums lost after being burnt and stolen centuries ago.”⠀
