Paul Fenniak, Late Visitors, 2017

Fenniak is a new master painter/storyteller. He has an entire body of fascinating work that has become looser over the years and here is a more recent work that doesn’t idle on the details. It’s unclear as to who these late visitors are; are they friends who have shown up late at the host’s house, expecting to be fed? Are these ancestors who have died and are haunting the kitchen? Or are they the memories of experiences past lingering in our minds?
Critic Donald Kuspit says Fenniak is “a master of the psychological realism that has existed in secular North European painting from Dürer through Rembrandt to Degas and Max Beckmann.” We are inclined to agree.
