The soldier in the corner, influenced by Piero Della Francesca, is helping (or perhaps working against) the doppelgangers pulling back the curtain on the scene, referencing Shakespeare’s famous line “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.” The players are acting out a scene, or maybe the play has gone horribly wrong, as evidenced by the explosion and rescue operation. Gordon states that the painting “came out of a difficult point in my life where one chapter of my life was ending (exploding and burning up) and I was rescuing myself from it with a support network of friends.”
