This is a hipster murder mystery painting. Any one of the nine figures might be the killer; there are clues as each’s guilt/involvement in the crime, including the victim. Over the mantle you can see the bottom portion of David’s famous painting ‘The Death of Marat’ – Marat was a famous French revolutionary figure, and leader of the sans-culottes (“without culottes,” those little silk shorts that the bourgeoisie wore). Marat was the original hipster who used fashion as a political weapon and was assassinated for his politics in the end; this victim appears to have suffered the same cruel fate.
Pssst: I painted this!
