Greg Hergert, Curb Band, 2020

Hergert is one of us narrative painters here in Portland and is showing this painting in the exhibition I’m curating Understanding Ourselves at the Chehalem Cultural Center opening Feb 2nd.

Hergert is inspired by Portland’s streets and paints the scenes he sees through his own surrealist lens. He states “There was a time when garage bands were the definition of authenticity and origin usually associated with youth. Intense consumerism and wealth have caused garages to be filled with stuff, acting as storage facilities, which has ended the garage band era. Fledgling bands have taken to the street to practice and create their signature style and they are known as Curb Bands, unplugged and unafraid.”
