Franz Von Stuck, Pluto, 1909⠀

Pluto was the Roman name for the god Hades, ruler of the underworld. After an epic battle against their father, the three realms of sky, water, and underworld were split up between three victorious brothers: Zeus got the skies, Poseidon the water, and Hades the underworld. It is well-known that when one leaves the earth for the underworld, they will never come back. Hades was a god known to be just, although Stuck portrays him as mean. He angrily presides over the entrance to a flaming hell with his faithful dog Cerberus, who was said to have three heads and protect the gates of hell.⠀
