Arnold Böcklin, Self-Portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle, 1872

While in the act of painting, the artist pauses to gaze through the mirror offside at Death playing the fiddle just over his shoulder. When the song ends, the artist’s time will be up. Böcklin was 44 years old at the time, and probably considering the legacy he would leave – a common occurrence for us middle-aged artists!
