Adam Miller, The Cannibals, 2017

We have to talk about Adam Miller. It’s obvious that he’s a master painter and that he’s learned the lessons that Baroque artists have to teach us about infusing drama into a scene to invoke a strong reaction in the viewer. Look at the tension, the lighting, the movement, the birds in flight! We sense that in a few seconds the table from which the cannibals eat their meal will come crashing down under the chaos of the scene. And then there are the indecipherable characters in a fantastical scene: who are these people? Do we know this story? It feels familiar, and yet, we can’t recall from what myth or book or painting we’ve seen this before.
