John M Lally, The Weight, 2019

The composition of this painting references Caravaggio’s ‘Death of the Virgin,’ but the subject matter is much different – it is about anxiety and depression in the world today. The artist writes “The figures are representative of the faceless anxieties that find people in their lives while the main figure is bound in blue as well as blue looming over his head, all symbolizing depression as the world falls out beneath him.” Beneath the bed we see the floorboards give way to a cloudy abyss. We can feel the weight of the figure (perhaps a self-portrait) sinking into the bed. The painting is veritable allegory of our modern-day human condition.
