Joshua Langstaff, Citizen of the World, 2018

Tomorrow night! Come see this gorgeous golden painting at the exhibition closing for Understanding Ourselves, on now at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg, OR. Artists in the show will be there to chat about their work. There are some COVID restrictions on attendance numbers, so reserve your entry HERE.

The beautiful model for this painting was born into poverty and familial abuse in South Africa, but managed to escape to the US, where she became an activist and performance artist. A technicality precludes her from gaining South African citizenship, which is necessary for gaining immigration status in the US. She is a woman of no-land, yet remains strong. For Langstaff, she is the personification of Immigration. The Latin inscription reads ‘The Entire World,’ and the map reminds us that countries are artificial boundaries.
