Langstaff began this painting as a study in loneliness but it soon developed a story of its own. You, the viewer, are seated across from a young woman at an outdoor café in Bruges on a lovely summer’s eve, but she is not engaging with you. There are couples dining at a lively café in the background and another couple takes a romantic stroll across the square; both scenes are in direct contrast to your experience. The chess board tabletop subtly indicates that there is a psychological match between you and the young woman.
