Jack Vettriano, The Weight, 2010

Having grown up in poverty, Vettriano isn’t about to paint the familiar scenes from his youth, but rather, he steers towards the wealthy, the romantic, and the nostalgic. Here we see a man alone in his room at night. He is well-dressed; perhaps he works on Wall Street. The events of the day weigh heavily on his mind. Although the man’s dress and the objects in the room look like they could be from the Crash of 1929, it certainly feels emblematic of the current economic situation in 2020.
