Margaret McCann, Follow the Money, 2010

The artist writes that “It’s a still life based on the four years I lived in Atlantic City (I was teaching nearby), which you may know is what the Monopoly board was based on – I lived on Pacific Ave. Some of the objects are boardwalk souvenirs.” The still life scene recreates the boardwalk entirely out of game pieces and manmade objects that are being inundated by water (comprised of blue fabric). Some of the characters are surfing the waves and one is happily fishing.

“Uncle Moneybags is getting away by implied helicopter (inspired by the Yogi Bear cartoon), but everybody else is having fun and doesn’t notice that the piggy-bank is about to surf over the edge, or the impending flood.”
