John M Lally, Gassed (A Self-Portrait in Neon), 2019

We are excited to exhibit Gassed in our show Street Stories, opening at Brassworks Gallery on Dec 4th 2020. Sign up for the show preview: https://mailchi.mp/brassworksgallery.com/street-stories-preview

This painting looks like a scene out of a film noir, except that it’s neon; a neon noir! As the title indicates, it’s a self-portrait. Lally says “You’ll notice my skeletal gloved hand subtly pointing towards a neon sign that looks strikingly similar to the Japanese lucky cat. Green is also generally associated with good luck so as it illuminates my other side may suggest being surrounded by luck on all sides. Whether my pose indicates ambivalence to it is open for interpretation.” Us viewers are left to make up the plot line in the unwritten story.
