Artemesia Gentileschi, Susanna and the Elders, 1610

The book of Daniel tells the story of Susanna and the Elders. Susanna takes a bath in the garden one day when her servant lets in two Elders. They demanded sexual favours from Susanna, threatening that they would ruin her reputation should she refuse. She indeed refused and so the Elders made good on their threat. Daniel noticed that the Elders’ stories didn’t match up, and so the Elders were questioned separately and their story was exposed as a lie.
