Alexandre Cabanel, Echo, 1874⠀

That old philanderer Zeus loved to go down to earth and make love to beautiful nymphs. His wife Hera was extremely jealous and when she caught him with the nymph Echo, she put a curse on Echo that made the nymph unable to speak with the exception that she could repeat the last words spoken to her. Shortly thereafter Echo was walking in the woods and met the beautiful young man Narcissus. She immediately fell in love with him but was unable to voice her feelings. She watched in agony as Narcissus fell in love with himself. With a broken heart, she retreated to the mountains and that is why we hear Echo there today.⠀
