Janne Jääskeläinen, The Arrival, 2013

The artist explains that this painting is from a series titled ‘Wasteland.’ “The piece shares a common theme in the series and my work in general: a barren, vast, timeless land opening in front of the lonely figures travelling through it. Persistence and a seeming sense of direction often characterize them, yet their final destination is unclear and even in the moment of arriving to what might seem like a discovery, the weight of the atmosphere remains. What looks to be a town of sorts can also be interpreted as a graveyard. The journey of the two figures will most likely keep going. They must keep going. To where, no one knows.”
