The image is pared down to only the essentials. The artist writes that “The figures are meant to be generic (so to speak) and do not represent anyone in particular. The painting has lots to do with Jungian themes of individuation, anima and animus, the shadow self, and the alchemical marriage. Her eyes are closed and she is at peace. The figure holding the mirror is meant to be the dark side of herself. The figure on the mirror is the half-king half-queen representing the complete, whole individual. The candle represents the light of knowledge and understanding”⁠⠀
