Frans Schwartz, Agony in the Garden, 1898

Agony in the Garden is familiar story and moment from the life of Christ. Immediately after the Last Supper, Jesus takes a walk in the garden of Gethsemane with the three Apostles Peter, John and James. He asked them to stay awake and pray. When Jesus took a few steps from them to pray to God, he felt an overwhelming sadness, represented here in this painting. When he looked back at the Apostles, they had fallen asleep and Jesus comments “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” He then accepts that he will be betrayed by the Apostles.
