Chris Pothier, If I Could I Would Do It All Over Again, 2016

Pothier is one of us narrative painters here in Portland and writes the occasional Narrative Painting post. In this painting he deals with choices he has made in his life. He is both figures at once; the little boy who dreamt of becoming an astronaut or a professional hockey player confronts his older self who sold out and got a nine-to-five job that he is not invested in. Pothier writes “I grew up in a capitalist society on steroids, suburban Boston, where other parents ask your parents a few years after your birth where they plan on going to college or what firm they might work for, but I never wanted this life for myself. I dreamed of being an artist and lived that dream for the last 20 years. It’s not always easy or stable or smart, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
