Yuki Tham, Refuge, 2017

Tham says that she is not the model for this painting, yet it is still a self-portrait. She writes “The wall/pillar in the painting represents a safe haven or a protective shelter that safeguards insecurities and vulnerabilities; seeking refuge from the violence and hurtful emotional attacks that could bring me down spiritually.” If we assume that the various representations of the same woman make up the parts of Tham’s psyche, we see that some are protected while others run for emotional cover.
